Abstract: Shear thickening materials distinguishes themselves to act rigid under impact and be flexible at low shear rate. This property gives it a wide range of applications, including comfortable protection of the body. This study focuses on the use of shear thickening material as shin and fibula guard. Simulation are done to compare the current shin guards with leg guards made of shear thickening material. These simulations give also insight in the behaviour of shear thickening material and provide a basis for lower leg guard design. The used material, modelled with a first order Ogden model combined with a Prony shear relaxation model, shows an increase of 59.7% in peak force in comparison to the current shin guards. The study shows that the new material does not distribute the load as well as a stiff shell, used in current shin guards.
